Medication Precautions

Key Points for Taking Levothyroxine

Levothyroxine (Levothyroxine Sodium) is the most commonly used medication for hypothyroidism patients. Important considerations:

Best Time to Take

  • Early Morning Empty Stomach: Take 30-60 minutes before breakfast
  • Recommended Time: 6:00-7:00 AM
  • Avoid Taking with Food: Food significantly affects absorption

Factors Affecting Absorption

  • Coffee: Avoid coffee within 2 hours after taking medication
  • High Fiber Foods: Large amounts of fiber reduce absorption
  • Calcium/Iron Supplements: Take at least 4 hours apart
  • Soy Protein: May affect absorption

What to Do If You Miss a Dose

  • Discovered in Time: Take the missed dose immediately
  • Already Close to Next Dose Time: Skip this dose, take next dose normally
  • Don't Double Up: Never take a double dose at once

Key Points for Hyperthyroidism Medications

Important points for Propylthiouracil (PTU) and Methimazole:

Dosage Frequency

  • PTU: 2-3 times daily, after meals
  • Methimazole: Once daily, can be taken on empty stomach or after meals

Regular Monitoring

During medication, regular monitoring is needed:

  • Blood routine
  • Liver function
  • Thyroid function

Adverse Reactions

If the following symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately:

  • Fever, sore throat
  • Yellowing of skin, dark urine
  • Joint pain
  • Nausea and vomiting

Managing Multiple Medications

If taking multiple medications simultaneously:

Medication Grouping

Group medications for management:

  • Thyroid Medications: Levothyroxine, antithyroid drugs
  • Supplements: Calcium tablets, Vitamin D
  • Other Medications: Medications for other conditions

Medication Timing Arrangement

Avoid drug interactions:

  • Levothyroxine: Early morning empty stomach
  • Calcium Tablets: After lunch or dinner (4 hours apart from levothyroxine)
  • Antithyroid Medications: After meals
  • Other Medications: Arrange according to doctor's advice

Reminder Settings

Set independent reminders for each medication group:

  • Levothyroxine: 7:00
  • Morning medications: 8:00
  • Lunch medications: 13:00
  • Dinner medications: 19:00

FAQ

Q: What if I forget to take my medication?

A: If discovered in time (within 2 hours of planned time), you can take the missed dose immediately. If already close to next medication time, skip this dose and take the next dose at normal dosage. Never take a double dose at once.

Q: Can I modify the medication time?

A: Yes. Go to Medication Management and edit the reminder time for the medication. It is recommended to choose an easy-to-remember time, such as the same time every day.

Q: Will the system remind me when medication is running low?

A: Yes. When adding medication, you can set "inventory quantity." The system will estimate remaining days based on daily dosage and remind you in advance when running low.

Q: Can I record medication side effects?

A: Yes. Add notes in the medication record to document physical reactions after taking medication, which is helpful when explaining to your doctor.

Q: Can family members help set up reminders for me?

A: Currently, one account can only manage its own medications. If family members need to assist with management, it is recommended that they remember your medication times and remind you via phone or WeChat.
